AVI BioPharma names new CEO

Almost a year after Denis R. Burger resigned, AVI BioPharma Inc. has hired a permanent chief executive officer.

Portland-based AVI (NASDAQ: AVII), a developer of therapeutic products for the treatment of life-threatening diseases, named Leslie Hudson chief executive officer, effective immediately. He also joins the board as a director.

After Burger resigned in March 2007, board director K. Michael Forrest took over as interim CEO. Forrest will remain on the board of directors.

Until January this year, Hudson served as interim president and CEO of Rockville, Md.-based Nabi Biopharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: NABI). His previous industry appointments included CEO and president of Somerset, N.J.-based DOV Pharmaceutical Inc low fees payday loan. (OTCBB: DOVP), a biopharmaceutical company, and several senior positions at Peaback, N.J.-based Pharmacia Corp., including senior vice president of research and exploratory development, as well as general manager and group vice president of the ophthalmology business unit. He previously worked at U.K.-based Glaxo Wellcome — now GlaxoSmithKline PLC (NYSE: GSK) — in several senior positions, including vice president for discovery research.
