Baptist foundation increases number of Health Science Center scholarships

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio will receive $172,000 from the Baptist Health Foundation for 46 scholarships to health students.

The Baptist Health Foundation, created in 2005 following the sale of Baptist Health System to Nashville-based Vanguard Health Systems, is increasing its scholarship amount to Health Science Center students.

In 2007, the foundation gave 29 scholarships totaling $85,000.

The foundation furnishes scholarship money for students training to be physicians, dentists, nurses, clinical pharmacists, physician assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, dental hygienists, respiratory therapists and clinical laboratory scientists.

Baptist Health Foundation President and CEO W. Frank Elston told Health Science Center President Francisco Cigarroa that it is their privilege to be the school’s partner in helping students no qualifying payday advance.

"The foundation was impressed with the students selected to receive our scholarships in 2007 and we are pleased to offer more scholarships this year," Elston says.

The Health Science Center operates six campuses in San Antonio, Laredo, Harlingen and Edinburg. The university trains physicians, dentists, nurses, scientists and allied health professionals.

The Baptist Health Foundation plans to give a total of $4.5 million, including more than $770,000 in scholarships, to clinical, educational, spiritual and scientific services.
