BearingPoint names new COO

BearingPoint Inc. has appointed a new chief operating officer as the company attempts to shore up its bottom line.

The McLean, Va.-based company named David Hunter to the No. 2 spot, reporting to Ed Harbach, who was promoted from COO to chief executive officer in December.

Hunter's new role is effective immediately.

He retired from Accenture Ltd. at the end of 2005 after 30 years at the consulting company where he was most recently global senior partner.

As COO of BearingPoint, Hunter will be responsible for day-to-day operations. He will be based in Sydney, Australia.

"We are a global company; we are fairly dispersed in terms of where our senior executives are," said local spokesman Steve Lunceford. Harbach is based in New York, and the company's general counsel, Laurent Lutz, is in Chicago.

BearingPoint said Hunter will concentrate on global operations, specifically the Asia-Pacific business instant payday advance. He spent much of his time expanding Accenture's business in the same region, according to the statement.

Hunter "will play a key role in helping us build a stronger organization, grow strategic areas of our client base and execute our long-term business plan," said Harbach in a statement.

BearingPoint is an IT consulting firm that has offices in Honolulu and has consulted with state government and some of Hawaii's largest companies. Formerly known as KPMG Consulting, it has been cutting costs to put the company in a stronger position in 2008.

At the end of February, BearingPoint (NYSE: BE) reported it lost $169 million in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, or 77 cents per diluted share, compared with a loss of $108 million, or 51 cents per share, in the same quarter the previous year.
