Kansas City charter school Renaissance Academy settles discrimination claims
Imagine Schools Inc., which operates charter schools in the Kansas City area, has to pay $570,000 to settle claims of discrimination by two pregnant employees.
Virginia-based Imagine Schools was accused by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission of not retaining two pregnant employees after it closed its charter middle school and opened a private middle and high school, Renaissance Academy, at the same Kansas City location.
The EEOC said it tried to reach a settlement with Imagine Schools but decided to sue in September 2008.
The $570,000 due to LuShonda Smith and Charity Brooks represents the back pay owed to them, as well as emotional distress damages and attorneys’ fees personal loans for people with bad credit.
A representative for Imagine Schools was not immediately available for comment.
The school system also is under a two-year consent decree to disseminate a policy about discrimination and train employees about pregnancy discrimination, as well as report internal complaints to the EEOC.
