Mecklenburg unemployment dips to 5%

The unemployment rate in Mecklenburg County declined to 5 percent in April from 5.2 percent in March.

In April, 22,803 residents were unemployed among the county's labor force of 454,352, according to the Employment Security Commission of North Carolina.

Unemployment in the Charlotte/Gastonia/Concord area was 5.1 percent, down from 5.3 percent in March. There were 43,414 individuals in the regional labor force of 843,729 who were unemployed in April.

In the Hickory/Lenoir/Morganton metro area, unemployment was 6.3 percent, down from 6.5 percent in March.

In April, 10,750 residents of that market were unemployed in a work force of 170,785.

Here's a breakdown of area unemployment rates by county in April, compared with March:

  • Anson: 6.8 percent, down from 7.2 percent.
  • Cabarrus: 4.6 percent, down from 4.8 percent no fax payday loans.
  • Catawba: 5.9 percent, down from 6.2 percent.
  • Cleveland: 6.7 percent, same as in March.
  • Gaston: 6.1 percent, down from 6.2 percent.
  • Iredell: 4.9 percent, same as in March.
  • Lincoln: 5.6 percent, down from 5.8 percent.
  • Rowan: 5.2 percent, down from 5.4 percent.
  • Stanly: 4.9 percent, down from 5.2 percent.
  • Union: 4.6 percent, down from 4.8 percent.

Statewide, the unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in April, down from 5.3 percent in March.

Orange County had North Carolina's lowest unemployment rate in April, at 3.3 percent. Graham and Scotland counties had the highest rate, at 9.4 percent.
